Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Government of India enterprise, has been selected as the successful bidder for a major inter-state transmission project aimed at strengthening Indiaโs power infrastructure. The announcement was made on April 1, 2026, following a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process.
The project, titled โTransmission System Strengthening at Tumkur-II for Integration of Additional RE Potential (2.7 GW),โ is focused on supporting the integration of 2.7 GW of renewable energy into the national grid. This initiative is an important step in enabling the smooth flow of green power from generation-rich regions to high-demand areas, supporting Indiaโs clean energy goals.
The project will be developed under the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model. Under this structure, POWERGRID will manage the project throughout its lifecycle before transferring it to the designated authority after the contract period.
The project is located in Karnataka and includes the construction of a 400 kV double circuit transmission line. It also involves augmentation work at the Tumkur-II Pooling Station, including the installation of inter-connecting transformers and line bays. These upgrades are necessary to ensure grid stability and efficient handling of additional renewable energy capacity.
The Letter of Intent for the project was issued on March 30, 2026, and received by POWERGRID on April 1, 2026. The company disclosed this development in line with regulatory requirements. This project further strengthens POWERGRIDโs position in the inter-state transmission segment and supports Indiaโs ongoing transition toward a more sustainable and reliable energy system.
