GAIL (India) Limited has announced a major step into the renewable energy sector with plans to set up a large solar power project in Uttar Pradesh. The companyโ€™s board has approved a 600 MW greenfield solar facility, marking a significant move toward clean energy and long-term business growth.

A key feature of the project is the addition of a 550 MWh co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This system will help store excess solar power and supply it when needed, reducing the impact of fluctuations in solar generation. It will also support better grid stability and improve power reliability. This is a big jump for the company, as its current solar capacity is only about 29 MW.

The total estimated cost of the project is around INR 3,294.86 crore. This includes interest during construction, taxes, and other related expenses. The company plans to fund the project through a mix of debt and equity, showing strong financial commitment toward expanding its renewable portfolio.

According to the timeline, the project is expected to be completed within 15 months from the date of awarding the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract. The decision was finalized by the board during a meeting held on April 13, 2026.

The company said that this investment is aimed at supporting its future growth and aligning with Indiaโ€™s energy transition goals. The disclosure was signed by Company Secretary Deepak Asija and follows all required rules under SEBI regulations, confirming proper compliance.

With this move, GAIL is set to become a stronger player in Indiaโ€™s growing renewable energy market.
