Ørsted and Nuveen Inaugurate 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 Offshore Wind Farm in Germany

Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure have officially inaugurated the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, marking Ørsted’s largest operational offshore wind project in Germany.

Located approximately 72 kilometres off the German North Sea coast, the project is jointly owned on a 50:50 basis by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure. The wind farm is capable of generating enough renewable electricity annually to meet the consumption of nearly one million German households.

Borkum Riffgrund 3 is among Germany’s first offshore wind projects to reach the scale of a conventional power plant. Its 913 MW capacity is equivalent to nearly one-tenth of Germany’s national offshore wind capacity, according to statements made at the inauguration.

The project connects directly to TenneT’s DolWin epsilon offshore converter platform, marking the first such connection for an offshore wind farm in Germany. Ørsted said the project will support Germany’s growing demand for renewable electricity across industrial and digital sectors.

Major companies including Amazon, Google, EHA/REWE Group, Covestro and BASF are among the companies expected to benefit from renewable electricity associated with the project.

Rasmus Errboe, CEO of Ørsted, said Borkum Riffgrund 3 demonstrates the potential of offshore wind to provide large-scale renewable electricity for German households and industry while supporting energy security and decarbonisation.

The project was developed through a European supply chain, with wind turbines and foundations supplied from Germany and Denmark, cables from Germany and France, and installation vessels from the Netherlands and Belgium. Around 100 German companies were contracted during the development and construction of the wind farm.

Operations and maintenance activities are being carried out from Ørsted facilities in Norden-Norddeich and Emden.

Ørsted said offshore wind also contributes to economic activity beyond Germany’s coastal regions. In 2025, the German offshore wind industry generated more than 30,000 full-time jobs and approximately €14.6 billion in gross value, according to the company.

Borkum Riffgrund 3 is Ørsted’s sixth operational offshore wind farm in Germany. With the project now operational, Ørsted’s installed offshore wind capacity in the country has increased to approximately 2.5 GW, representing around 25% of Germany’s offshore wind market.
