G20 ministers responsible for research and innovation recently met in Manaus, Brazil, where they approved the Manaus Package, which includes a significant deliverable: the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Energy Innovation Policy Guide. This guide aims to assist governments and other stakeholders in promoting clean energy technologies and services.
The IEA developed the guide in response to requests from the Research and Innovation Working Group of the G20. It provides decision-makers with a variety of policy options to support ongoing cost reductions and enhance the performance of clean energy technologies. The guide pays special attention to the unique needs of emerging and developing economies.
As countries worldwide create new industrial strategies to harness the economic, environmental, and societal benefits of clean energy transitions, they are also focusing on building local manufacturing capabilities. Supporting innovation and establishing technology ecosystems are crucial for nurturing new ideas, particularly in emerging markets. These innovations can drive growth, reduce inequalities, and improve living standards while helping countries meet their climate and energy goals.
The guide features various policy design options and success stories, serving as a platform for international knowledge sharing and cooperation. These examples are designed to inspire countries facing energy challenges and those aiming to advance in the clean energy sector. The guide can also aid bilateral and multilateral partners in identifying effective support opportunities.
In addition to the guide, the Manaus Package highlights several energy technologies relevant to emerging and developing economies, referencing the IEA’s Clean Energy Technology Guide. This comprehensive approach aims to unlock breakthroughs in clean energy technologies and foster a sustainable future through collaborative efforts and innovative policies. By addressing both technological advancements and economic growth, the G20 ministers are paving the way for a greener and more equitable world.
