The Department of Energy (DOE) is set to roll out the 7th Round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA-7) this year, reaffirming its commitment to accelerating renewable energy deployment and attracting increased private sector participation in the countryโs energy transition.
The DOE is expected to release the Terms of Reference (TOR) for GEA-7 by the second quarter of the year, providing developers with detailed guidelines for participation. The auction will offer renewable energy capacities nationwide, with a significantly higher allocation planned for Mindanaoโestimated at nearly five times the capacity offered in previous rounds. This move aims to stimulate investments, address rising energy demand, and strengthen grid resilience in the region.
GEA-7 will include solar rooftop, ground-mounted solar, and floating solar technologies. Rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects are scheduled to begin delivery in 2027, while floating solar projects are expected to come online between 2027 and 2029. The floating solar segment will also incorporate unsubscribed capacities from the earlier fourth auction round (GEA-4), ensuring optimal utilization of available capacity.
To enhance grid stability, the DOE has mandated the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for all ground-mounted solar projects under this round. This requirement is intended to improve dispatchability and mitigate the intermittency challenges associated with solar power generation.
The DOE has encouraged renewable energy developers to participate actively in GEA-7 and register their projects early to ensure eligibility. Through this initiative, the department aims to foster a transparent, competitive, and investor-friendly framework while advancing the Philippinesโ renewable energy capacity and long-term sustainability goals.
Stakeholders have been advised to follow official DOE announcements for further updates on the auction process.
