Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) has issued a Request for Selection (RfS) for the development of 450 MW / 900 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Gujarat. The tender, released on June 22, 2026, marks another significant step in India’s efforts to strengthen grid infrastructure and support the growing share of renewable energy in the power mix.
The project will be awarded through a tariff-based competitive bidding process and is being supported by the Government of India under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme of the Power System Development Fund (PSDF) Phase-IX. The initiative aims to encourage large-scale deployment of battery storage systems that can help balance electricity supply and demand while improving grid reliability.
One of the key highlights of the tender is the financial support being offered under the VGF scheme. Developers selected for the project will be eligible for funding of ₹18 lakh per MWh. This financial assistance is expected to reduce the overall project cost and improve the commercial viability of battery storage investments. Industry participants are expected to show strong interest due to the attractive support mechanism.
The standalone BESS facilities will be connected through ten different substations across Gujarat. The total planned evacuation capacity is estimated at around 800 MW. This infrastructure arrangement is expected to provide flexibility in grid operations and support the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
GUVNL has also announced the detailed bidding schedule. Interested bidders can submit queries related to the tender documents until June 29, 2026, by 5:00 PM. A pre-bid meeting will be held through video conferencing on July 2, 2026, at 12:00 PM.
The last date for online bid submission is July 13, 2026, by 5:00 PM, while hard-copy documents must be submitted by July 16, 2026. The technical bids will be opened on July 17, 2026, at 12:00 PM. Dates for the financial bid opening and reverse e-auction will be announced later for technically qualified bidders.
The tender represents a major opportunity for energy storage developers and reflects Gujarat’s continued focus on building a stronger and more flexible clean energy ecosystem.
