The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Siquijor has successfully inaugurated a hybrid solar power photovoltaic (PV) system at the Bosong-bosong Water Services Association (BWSLA) facility in Sitio Bosong-bosong, Timbaon, San Juan.
The new system is expected to provide a reliable and sustainable source of electricity for the community, ensuring uninterrupted water supply and reducing dependence on the grid. This initiative is part of DOST Siquijor’s efforts to promote renewable energy and address the needs of marginalized communities.
Engr. de la Peรฑa, Director of DOST Siquijor, emphasized the transformative potential of science and technology in addressing community challenges. “This project demonstrates the viability and positive impact of embracing renewable energy solutions,” he said.
The hybrid solar power system has already resulted in significant financial savings for BWSLA, reducing their monthly electricity expenses by P6,000. These savings have allowed the association to reinvest in their infrastructure, including the construction of a durable perimeter fence and renovation of the collection section.
The project was made possible through the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program, a flagship initiative of DOST designed to drive economic development in marginalized communities.
The successful implementation of the CEST Project at BWSLA highlights the importance of collaboration between government agencies and grassroots organizations in addressing community needs and promoting sustainable development.
