A Regional Meeting on the Power Sector was held in New Delhi, chaired by Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, along with Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy (NRE), Shri Shripad Yesso Naik. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including senior officials from participating states and heads of power utilities, to discuss critical issues impacting the sector.
A key focus of the discussions was the financial health of power distribution companies (DISCOMs) and the slow progress of projects under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Secretary (Power), Shri Pankaj Agarwal, stressed the need for timely execution of RDSS projects to enhance operational efficiency. He also urged states to implement the Resource Adequacy Plan strategically and address pending issues in generation and transmission projects.
Union Minister of State for Power and NRE highlighted the importance of a financially robust and future-ready power sector to support Indiaโs growth. He noted that rising electricity demand, driven by electric vehicles, data centers, and renewable energy (RE) integration, calls for collective efforts. The meeting also underscored the need for enhanced cybersecurity frameworks to protect critical infrastructure.
In his closing remarks, Shri Manohar Lal emphasized the power sector’s crucial role in India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He pointed out that achieving net-zero carbon emissions will require greater investment in renewable energy sources and storage solutions like Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSP). He also stressed financial sustainability through cost-reflective tariffs, improved creditworthiness of DISCOMs, and adopting best practices for energy efficiency.
The meeting saw the launch of the 13th Integrated Ratings for 63 distribution utilities, with Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited securing the top spot. Additionally, reports on Consumer Services Rating of DISCOMs (CSRD) and Distribution Utilities Ranking (DUR) were released, recognizing top-performing utilities across various categories.
The Ministry of Power reaffirmed its commitment to fostering inter-state collaboration and supporting renewable energy integration, ensuring a sustainable and financially sound power sector for India’s future.
