Severe equipment wear, major generation losses, and rising maintenance costs are everyday hurdles for PV projects in sandy regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Northwestern China. Sandstorms, in particular, have long challenged the solar industry, threatening both reliability and investment returns.

Sungrowโ€™s 1+X 2.0 modular inverter recently put its durability to the test. Partnering with TรœV Rheinland, a global authority in inspection and certification, Sungrow carried out a 100-day on-site trial at a PV plant deep within the desert. The conditions were brutal: winds exceeded level 10 on the Beaufort scale, visibility dropped below 100 meters, and PM10 levels spiked above 4000 ฮผg/mยณ. Over the course of the test, the inverter endured five major sandstorms, totaling 45 days of sand-laden weather. The question was clear: could the 1+X 2.0 deliver under such extremes?

Results after 45 days of sandstorms: reliable power, zero maintenance

At the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, technicians inspected the inverter after the trial, combining on-site disassembly with operational data analysis. The findings were decisive:

  1. Sealed and dust-free: The electronic compartment stayed fully sealed, with no dust intrusion. Internal components were spotless, and cooling ducts showed no notable buildup. Unlike conventional invertersโ€”often burdened by filter cleanings and duct maintenance during sandstorm seasonโ€”the 1+X 2.0 required no maintenance throughout the trial.

  2. Stable and continuous output: The inverter ran without interruption, with no derating, shutdowns, or failures caused by dust-clogged cooling. Its power output curve remained smooth and consistent, proving strong resilience and operational reliability under some of the harshest conditions on Earth. TรœV Rheinlandโ€™s certification expert, Tian Xingxin, witnessed the entire testing process. โ€œThis test fully validated the sandstorm resistance and operational stability of 1+X 2.0. Over 100 days, the inverter ran smoothly with no internal blockages, setting a new benchmark for PV equipment in extreme environments,โ€ he commented.
