Sunkonnect has announced plans to reduce the carbon footprint of India’s rapidly growing events and exhibitions industry by 5% over the next five years through a newly launched portfolio of net-zero and carbon management solutions.
The initiative comes as India’s events and exhibition sector, valued at nearly USD 14.3 billion (₹1.2 lakh crore) in 2024, continues to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6%. According to industry estimates, large-scale events in India currently generate between 12 million and 18 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, with travel contributing up to 90% of total event-related emissions.
Sunkonnect stated that its target is based on an aspirational roadmap to provide carbon management solutions for nearly 1,200 major events annually by 2028. Under this plan, the company aims to help mitigate up to 960,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year through emission measurement, reduction strategies, and carbon offset mechanisms.
The company’s net-zero solutions include detailed carbon footprint assessments covering electricity usage, logistics, travel, materials, catering, and waste generation. Based on these assessments, Sunkonnect works with event organisers to implement customised decarbonisation strategies such as energy optimisation, sustainable logistics, eco-friendly materials, and low-carbon catering solutions.
For residual emissions that cannot be eliminated, the company facilitates the retirement of carbon credits sourced from renewable energy, agroforestry, and waste management projects.
Avishek Kumar said the company’s goal is to drive a large-scale sustainability movement within India’s event ecosystem and demonstrate how collaborative climate action can significantly reduce emissions across the sector.
The company recently served as the Carbon Neutral Partner for the 9th Responsible Business Membership Organisations (BMO) Awards 2026 organised by Foundation for MSME Clusters. As part of the partnership, Sunkonnect conducted carbon accounting, enabled carbon credit retirement, and supported MSMEs with decarbonisation strategies.
Rohit Sikkewal said sustainability is becoming a critical requirement for the events industry as organisations increasingly focus on measuring, reducing, and offsetting emissions to align with climate commitments and long-term business resilience.
Sunkonnect also plans to support MSMEs operating within the event ecosystem through ESG advisory services, greenhouse gas assessments, sustainability workshops, and green finance guidance.
Industry estimates suggest that advancements in technology and operational practices could help the sector reduce emissions by 40–60% over time. However, as India’s event industry emissions are projected to rise to nearly 26 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030, carbon neutralisation and offsetting solutions are expected to play a growing role in achieving sustainability targets.
Through its net-zero initiative, Sunkonnect aims to support India’s broader climate and decarbonisation goals while helping the country strengthen its position as a global hub for events and exhibitions.
