Redefine Properties has continued to strengthen its focus on renewable energy by expanding its solar power capacity across its property portfolio in South Africa. According to the company’s interim results for the period ending February 2026, its total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity reached 62.23MWp. This marks a 7.2 percent increase compared to the previous year and highlights the company’s growing investment in sustainable energy solutions.

The majority of the solar installations are located within the company’s retail properties. Shopping centres and malls contribute nearly 48MWp of the total solar capacity, making retail the largest contributor to the company’s renewable energy generation. Industrial properties account for around 8.23MWp, while office buildings add approximately 6.21MWp. Together, these onsite solar systems generated nearly 43.6MWh of electricity during the reporting period, helping reduce dependence on South Africa’s national power grid and lowering operational energy costs.

Apart from onsite generation, Redefine is also increasing its use of energy wheeling arrangements. Wheeling allows renewable electricity generated at one location to be transferred through the existing grid and used at another site. During the reporting period, the company successfully wheeled around 18.5MWh of electricity through short-term agreements.

One of the key examples of this approach is Redefine’s participation in the City of Cape Town’s wheeling pilot project. The initiative includes a large 5.7MWp rooftop solar installation at the Brackengate 2 facility. This project demonstrates how property companies are exploring new ways to access renewable power while improving energy security.

The company also plans to further expand its renewable energy portfolio. Redefine currently has an additional 5.6MWp of solar capacity under development, with the investment estimated at nearly R101 million. In addition, the company signed a long-term renewable energy agreement with NOA in 2025. Under this arrangement, renewable electricity will be supplied to 11 properties connected to the Eskom grid over the next 20 years. The partnership is expected to provide around 37GWh of clean energy annually.

Redefine stated that the financial impact of its renewable energy strategy is already visible. The company estimates cumulative savings from its solar investments have reached about R107.5 million. Through a combination of onsite solar generation and wheeling agreements, the company is reducing its carbon emissions while also protecting itself from rising electricity prices and supply disruptions in South Africa’s energy market.
