The contribution was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed during the Second Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Officials’ Meeting in Shanghai. The agreement was signed by Tamura Hideyasu, Japan’s Senior Official for APEC, and Eduardo Pedrosa, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat.

The funding will be directed to the Sub-Fund for Energy Efficiency, Low-Carbon and Energy Resiliency Measures, which supports initiatives aimed at strengthening cleaner, more reliable, and sustainable energy systems across APEC member economies.

According to APEC, the contribution will help accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies, enhance energy resilience in disaster-prone communities, and expand access to reliable electricity services in rural and remote regions.

The initiative is also expected to support progress toward APEC’s broader energy and sustainability targets, including a 45% reduction in energy intensity by 2035, doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030, and improving energy access across developing economies within the region.

Eduardo Pedrosa, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, noted that energy systems across the Asia-Pacific are undergoing rapid transformation as economies pursue growth, innovation, and digital development, creating new challenges and opportunities for the region’s energy sector.

The contribution underscores Japan’s continued support for regional energy transition efforts and collaborative approaches to building low-carbon, resilient, and inclusive energy systems across the Asia-Pacific.
