Communities in LaSalle County now benefit from a more reliable and resilient electricity supply following the completion of the LaSalle Link Project, a new 11-mile high-voltage transmission line connecting Oglesby to North Utica in Illinois, USA. The project was developed to strengthen the local power grid by creating additional pathways for electricity to flow into the region. This improved connectivity helps reduce the likelihood and severity of power outages, supports faster restoration during disruptions, and prepares the grid to meet growing energy demand as the area continues to develop.
Along with the transmission line, aging substations were also upgraded to ensure the system can handle both current and future electricity needs more effectively. The new transmission line operates at 138 kilovolts and connects the Corbin substation in Oglesby with an existing substation near North Utica. The route begins in Oglesby, runs north parallel to Interstate 39, then turns east alongside Interstate 80 before reaching its final destination. This carefully planned route was designed to improve efficiency while integrating with existing infrastructure corridors.
According to Patrick Smith Sr., President of Ameren Illinois, the LaSalle Link Project plays an important role in ensuring continuous electricity supply for customers throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. He emphasized that strengthening the grid in advance of severe weather events helps improve reliability and speeds up recovery when outages do occur.
He also noted that the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, reflecting a focus on delivering value to customers through efficient planning and execution.Before construction began, the project underwent a detailed public engagement process. Feedback was gathered through both in-person and virtual open house sessions, allowing community members, landowners, and local stakeholders to share their views on the proposed transmission route.
Following this consultation process, the project received approval in the form of a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the Illinois Commerce Commission in August 2023.During construction, Ameren Illinois prioritized hiring local union electrical workers from within the state, supporting local employment and ensuring that project benefits extended to the regional workforce.
This approach helped strengthen community participation in the project while also maintaining high construction standards.Julie Youngren, Project Manager for the LaSalle Link Project, acknowledged the contributions of landowners, officials, and community members who provided input during the planning stages. She highlighted that community feedback played an important role in shaping the final design and route of the transmission line.
