Awarded in May 2022, the project was executed by Tecnimont Private Limited in collaboration with NEXTCHEM, marking a pivotal advancement in India’s low-carbon energy sector. The facility is designed to produce 4.3 tons of green hydrogen per day using 10 megawatt-based electrolysers, positioning GAIL as the first state-owned gas utility to commence megawatt-scale green hydrogen production.

The GAIL Vijaipur plant supports India’s Hydrogen Mission, which aims to achieve an annual green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 million tons by 2030. This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to become energy independent by 2047 and to reach Net Zero by 2070. Green hydrogen is deemed crucial for the energy transition, offering potential applications in renewable energy storage, industrial fuel replacement, clean transportation, decentralized power generation, aviation, and marine transport.

NEXTCHEM will use the Vijaipur plant as a reference for pursuing further energy transition projects in India. Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE Group, expressed pride in the achievement, noting that it positions MAIRE at the forefront of sustainable solutions in India, supported by a workforce of over 3,000 people.

“We are extremely proud of this achievement, which best positions MAIRE in India for future prospects in the energy transition space, having contributed to the implementation of the largest green hydrogen plant in the country,” Bernini stated.
